Th Lab Prep Technician facilitate efficient workflow process within three unique areas of the lab by preparing specimens, specialized media, maintaining equipment for testing; entering data into the computer system; filing slides;ordering supplies and stocking work area. They interact with clinic and hospital staff while ensuring excellent customer service and patient confidentiality. The Lab Prep Technician assists the manager in development of laboratory competencies, and ensures completion by all The Lab Prep Technicians, They participate in quality control monitoring, instrumentation maintenance and troubleshooting. They demonstrate initiative to improve processes.
Responsible for achieving and maintaining competency as demonstrated by departmental skills roster. Properly handles specimens as needed in the department. Assesses the acceptability of the sample for examination or testing. Prepares Fine needle aspirate, body fluids, pap smears and other cytology samples for testing, using the proper techniques that include staining, cover slipping, contrifuging and other processing techniques.
Operates, calibrates, and maintains the lab equipment needed to properly prepare samples for analysis. Recognizes when the equipment is not functioning properly. Makes decisions on most appropriate corrective action to resolve instrument problems and performs corrective action. Performs and records equipment maintenance in their area of responsibility.
Responsible for set-up of microbiology samples in preparation for testing. Resulting of positive rapid strep tests. Understands sterile technique, streaking technique, and correct order for inoculating media. Responsible for making specialized media for the microbiology and flow. Understands specialized glass wash procedures and autoclaving.
Enters collection, demographic and sample information in the computer. Appropriately labels specimens and requisitions for tracking information and reporting. Verifies the correct patient ID is maintained through all stages of the processing and sample handling. Understands the flow of laboratory data via laboratory information system and electronic health record. Understands the systems and needs of external customers and plans appropriately.
Follows and understands all department policies and procedures. Completes the required training and skills rosters needed. Works with new employees to orient, train and assess skils. Writes/revises procedures for the section to ensure they are current, accurate and meet the standards of accrediting agencies.
Utilizes the computer to run logs and reports required for daily operations and other reports as specified on skills rosters and task lists. Properly sorts and files patient reports, requisitions, slides and samples. Transports block files to morgue and arranges for the transfer of block files to storage.
Evaluates cost effectiveness for laboratory products from various vendors and suppliers. Prepares and/or orders proper quality reagents and supplies needed for sample preparation or testing to assure they are available as needed in the department.
Assists all Gundersen Health System staff by answering phone calls about specimen collection requirements and other lab related questions to provide accurate information to facilitate quick access to lab information as needed.
