JOB SATISFACTION AND PRODUCTIVITY
Your health and productivity are closely linked. How you feel physically, mentally, socially and spiritually impacts your performance at work. When you are at work, but not fully focused or engaged in what you need to accomplish, perhaps because you are ill, concerned about a loved one, are on medications that affect your alertness, or you just need a vacation, that is called presenteeism. When presenteeism exists, your productivity and effectiveness at work suffer.

Getting a good night's sleep, eating breakfast, taking stretch breaks, exercising regularly, following treatment recommendations for a chronic health condition, taking medications and herbal supplements correctly, practicing stress management and maintaining a positive relationship with your co-workers all have a positive effect on the job you do at work.

Maximize your productivity and satisfaction at work
By incorporating healthy behaviors in your life, you'll minimize unplanned absences and be more productive at work. Here are other suggestions to help you make the most of your workday:
  • Stay home when you are ill. Give yourself time to heal. If your condition is infectious, you don't want to expose co-workers. Similarly, if a loved one is not well and your thoughts and attention are focused on that individual, it may be necessary to stay home.
  • As often as possible, schedule time away from work in advance. Staying well and helping your family members stay well will keep unplanned absences to a minimum.
  • Time away from work is important. Whether you take a vacation or decide that a “staycation” is what you need, a change of pace or a much needed break to focus on yourself will bring you back refreshed and ready to do the best you can.
  • When available, consider participating in employer-sponsored wellness programs.
At work, you will typically have the most satisfaction when you are engaged and getting tasks accomplished in a timely way, when you can count on others and they can count on you.
